You accepted a contract or temporary position to hold you over and to pay the bills while you searched for a permanent position with associated benefits. But that was a few weeks ago, and in the interim, your long term plans have changed.
You’ve had some time to find your footing in this workplace, and you’ve decided that you like it here. You’ve made some new contacts, you’ve learned something about how this business works, and you’ve even had a few chances to make a difference and help this organization succeed. So if the opportunity arises, you’ll do whatever it takes to make this short term gig into a long term relationship. Here a few ways you can move this agenda forward.
1. Let your supervisor know what you want. This is an easy first step, and it’s best to do it sooner rather than later. There may be others around you who are eyeing the open position that’s meant for you, and you want to get the cheese before they do. And besides, as soon as your manger knows your intentions, she’ll be in a better position to help you.
2. Ask for advice. As you let her know your intentions, ask her what you can do to get the attention you need and/or submit a formal application. If you’re working through a staffing agency, she can help you renegotiate your contract.
3. Build connections, relationships and advocates. Strengthen your footing in this place by making yourself indispensable. Chat with those around you, find ways to help them do their jobs, remember their names, and do things that encourage them to speak well of you.
4. Dress the part. As the old saying goes, dress for the job you want, not the one you have. If you’ve been showing up in sweats or jeans, now is the time to change that. Wear whatever the permanent employees around you are wearing.
5. Make the job your own. Start thinking about the kinds of unique skill sets and talents you can bring to the role in question, because sooner or later somebody will ask you to explain why you should be hired. You’ll want to have your answer ready.
